Landscapes

Church Rock                oil pastel on board (2019)

Church Rock is a sandstone monument located at the junction of Hwy 191 and 211 in Southeast Utah. Highway 211 goes through the Indian Creek area and ends up at the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park.

Everywhere you go in the world, there is a landscape waiting to be admired. Here are a few of my endeavors to depict a few of them. Some were done on location, others in the studio (garage, sofa,  coffee shop, motel, etc...). Some landscapes are imaginary.

Above Coches Landing           oil pastel (1991)

This oil pastel painting was made during a residency on Santa Cruz Island, California. It depicts the Southwest side of the island. Santa Cruz is the largest island in the Channel Islands National Park. Different parts of the island are managed in part by the National Park Service, the Nature Conservancy and the United States Navy.

Mountain Scape #3                     oil pastel (1987)

An abstracted painting based on the Topa Topa Mountains above Ojai, California.

Warning Sky                             monotype (1993)

The Falls at Twilight       monotype (1993)

A small print inspired by the granite cliffs and waterfalls of Yosemite National Park.

Taylor Ranch                               oil pastel (1988)

I grew up by Taylor Ranch in Ventura, California, in the 1950s.  It was a cattle ranch, and had quite the aroma when the wind was in our direction.

                                                        (stolen from exhibition)

Evening Palm            oil pastel (1991)

The tree was in the front yard. The background is contrived, but based on the Ojai Valley in California.

Sunset Mountains                         oil pastel (2006)

The first time that I visited Moab, Utah, I stayed at  the KOA campground and had a great view of the La Sal Mountains.

In 1974 my friend, Jeff Mayer, asked if I would illustrate Booklet, a collection of his poems and quotes. It was published in 1975, and saw a few versions up until the last one in 1982. These are
pages from 1978, done in pen & ink on Bristol board.

In 2007 I had the honor of being Artist In The Park at Arches National Park, Utah. I had a wonderful campsite and spent 10 days wandering about making sketches and paintings. I've been back a number of times and never tire of the beauty. Here are a few of the landscapes of Arches, and some other views of Southeast Utah.

This was painted on the 4th of July. The temperature was over 100 degrees and even though I was in the shade, the dark oil pastels melted. The trees on the left were made by dipping my finger into the liquefied pastel.

Another hot day in Oak View, California.

Music

Farmers Market, Grangeville, Idaho

I've been playing music since my mom bought me my first guitar in 1967. I'm currently in a trio called Missing Parts along with John Henderson on harmonica and Thomas Simpson on
bass.
Crema Cafe, Grangeville, Idaho

My earliest music influences were mainly from television, especially black & white cartoons, such as Merry Melodies and Betty Boop.  I also liked Farmer John's Polka Parade, a Saturday night show popular where I grew up in the fifties.

My musical interests have expanded greatly over the years, and have been one of the ongoing
subjects of my artwork.
